Chapter 5
Brandon wandered around the condo heâd been sharing with his dad thinking about Shelby declaring that she loved him. He was happy for it, but it still felt to him that she had changed her mind too quickly. Or perhaps he was just thinking stuff like that because he was nervous. Brandon felt like he had spent his entire life being nervous and stressed about one thing or another. And now that he had something that he wanted seemingly just dropped into his lap, he wasnât sure what to do with it. Christ, he needed to talk to someone.
âI was just going to have some lunch. Want to share?â He started to tell his dad he wasnât hungry but decided that heâd give it a shot to talk to him about it. It was times like this when he wished more than anything that Holly was still alive and there for him and the other cousins. She was the best person in the world to talk to.
Going into the kitchen, his belly rumbled when he could smell the fries in the air fryer as well as sloppy joe mix on the stove. He realized that he missed something when his dad turned and looked at him like he was expecting an answer.
âI didnât hear you. I mean, really, I was concentrating too hard on things I have going on.â Dad asked him if he wanted to talk about it. âIâm not sure where to start. Aunt Holly used to be my shoulder when I was unsure of something. She had a way about her that she knew what you wanted to talk about but would, I donât know, talk about something related to it and walk you through the problem without you even understanding how. Iâm not comparing you to her. I just wanted to let you know that Iâve never vented or whatever this would be called to anyone but her. I can talk to my cousins too. However, now that theyâre married and have families I donât want to take away their time with family to let me go on and on about stuff. Understand?â
âI think so. I want to help you, Brandon, but I canât if you donât allow me to try.â He said that he understood that, but he was just working through it.â Dad nodded and turned back to the stove. âI didnât have anyone to talk to either after my mom passed away. She really wasnât all that good of a listener but sometimes if I caught her in the right mood, which really means she wasnât pissed off at your grandda, then sheâd help me out. Or I guess made me figure out what the issue was by talking about whatever she happened to be doing at the moment. Baking was the best time. Sheâd have to concentrate on her baking as well as me not eating most of what she was making. You know, Abby, her cooking reminds me so much of my Momâs cooking.
