Chapter eleven

The town square wasn’t all that far, and the day was sunny and warm. For Sheriff Wakefield, it meant leaving his truck at Maggie’s, but he had already let dispatch know that he wasn’t available for a while. He needed to stretch his legs and being with Maggie was always a pleasure.

“It’s a little lunch place,” he was explaining to her, “I used to eat here every day, until a certain bakery opened. Now I tend to hang around there on my lunch.”

Maggie raised an eyebrow and the corner of her mouth lifted like it did when she was about to say something cheeky. “You know I could have fed you today too.”

“Yeah, but this time you don’t have to cook, there will be no dishes to wash and, most of all, you get out of your bakery and into open air. This one is on me.”

He gestured toward their goal and Maggie burst into laughter. “Are you sure you can afford such a place? I wish I had known, I feel underdressed.”

“Don’t be catty.” Wakefield couldn’t help but smile. She was comfortable enough with him to tease him a little. “I will have you know that Roberto has the finest food truck in three states. So, the napkins are recycled cardboard, but the food is fantastic.”

“Cubano?” Maggie came skidding to a halt when she saw the menu board. “They have Cubanos?”

“And the BBQ beef will melt before it hits your teeth.”

She stared at the menu, she must have read it three or four times. She began bouncing a little on the balls of her feet and he could see the child she must have been once. “I tell you what,” he said to break her indecision. “Get a BBQ and a Cubano and we’ll split them. That way you can try a little of each.”

“It smells wonderful,” Maggie admitted.

That it did. Wakefield’s stomach growled as he ordered. He hoped she didn’t hear and covered by indicating a nearby bench.

“Linen tablecloths.” Maggie gingerly picked up a discarded napkin and brought it to a nearby trash can.

“All right. I warned you it’s not fancy, but” Wakefield held up a hand, “wait till you taste the food.”

Maggie stood next to the bench and looked between it and the trash can. “That’s what…four feet? At most? They couldn’t take it four feet?”

Wakefield was spared the rest of her justifiable righteous indignation when Roberto called out that their food was ready. He quickly jumped up to retrieve the paper wrapped sandwiches, juggling them from hand to hand because they were so hot. One Cubano perfectly toasted and packing more cheese than a pizza. One BBQ beef that smelled and tasted as though it had been marinating for decades. They came with a small side of fries that were chip crunchy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. And as always, there was just the right amount of salt.

He watched as she picked up that sandwich and considered it before sinking her teeth into the crusty roll.
