CHAPTER ELEVEN

MIA MOVED AROUND on her plastic chair, trying to get comfortable. Her clothes were still damp and salty and stuck to her skin. The white shorts were now more of a grey color, and her pink shirt had a rip in one sleeve. The odor of disinfectant drifted past her nostrils, and she wanted to cover her nose. She hated the smell of hospitals. While this wasn’t technically a hospital, it was the closest they got here on St. John.

They were in the Myrah Keating Smith Interim Health Centre, brought here by the well-meaning locals who’d fished them out of the ocean. This new facility had been built right next to the old one, which’d been destroyed by Hurricane Irma. She was alone in the long, white corridor, and the urge to get up and run was getting stronger by the second.

Logan’s boat had exploded. Been set alight. On purpose. Someone had tried to kill them. This was like living in a waking nightmare. How had she got mixed up in all of this?

And the worst part was, her money had been on that boat. All her life savings had gone up in a ball of fire. What was she going to do now? That money was going to be her fresh start.

There was movement off to her left.

“How’s Sierra?” she asked, standing up as Logan came out of one of the private exam rooms, his face drawn and haggard.

“Better now.” He came up and enfolded her in his arms. At first, she thought it was to reassure her, but then she realized he was drawing as much comfort from her as she was from their contact.

“That’s good.” She sagged into him with relief. Sierra had nearly drowned. When the boat exploded, she and Reed were still standing on the foredeck. In the pandemonium that followed, it’d taken a while for them all to realize Sierra hadn’t resurfaced with the rest of them. She must’ve been knocked unconscious by flying debris.

Reed had surfaced, coughing and spluttering, dazed and barely coherent. But it’d been Dalton who dived down to try and find Sierra. It’d taken him two goes before he found her and dragged her, not breathing, to the surface.

Luckily a nearby launch that’d been heading out on a fishing charter appeared next to them and Dalton had practically thrown Sierra on board, then leaped aboard himself and started CPR. By that stage Reed had figured out what was going on and was also hauling himself onto the boat, roaring like an enraged bull. One of the men on board the charter had to physically hold him back so Dalton could work on Sierra. Keira was helped on board by one of the other men, as Mia watched the whole thing unfold from the water.

After what seemed like hours—but was in reality probably only seconds—the passengers gave a cheer of triumph and Dalton stood up to let Reed bend down next to Sierra. She was breathing again.

A wave of nausea had swept over Mia.
