Matt

I was sitting at my desk when I got the call. My grandmother had given me a lot to think about. There was no way that I had room to argue with her. Then again, when it came to Grams, there was almost no chance to argue. Ever.

Any hope I might have had of being able to walk past her without a hitch was a pointless one. That did not stop me from trying. I walked slowly, calmly, as if I was afraid of setting off some kind of alarm. In a way, it reminded me of trying not to set off mines in the military. This was mostly due to the fact that I knew I had probably overreacted and I didn’t feel like getting lectured. Grams let me pass by her without a word, made me believe that there was going to be no talking, but of course, it wasn’t going to be so easy.

“Where do you think you’re going, young man?” she said.

As old as I was, she was always going to be my grandmother. And that meant she was probably the only person in the world who could stop me from taking another step further by simply saying that one thing. Her voice carried all the authority in the world. Billionaire CEO or not, I stopped dead in my tracks at being called young man.

Kayla may have had the magical ability to make me feel like I was younger but there was a difference between feeling like a carefree teenager and a naughty little boy. That was how my grandmother made me feel that day. I froze and it felt like my whole body sighed on the inside. I didn’t sigh out loud. I could only imagine the look on my grandmother’s face if I’d done that. I probably would have gotten some comment about how I was not too old for a spanking. We both knew that wasn’t true, but it didn’t stop her from making the comment – nor did it stop me from feeling the mortification wash over me. Apparently, I wasn’t too old to be chastised by the woman who helped raise me.

If I hadn’t been so worried about Kevin and Kayla, I might have laughed when she asked me if she could put on a pot of tea for us. I didn’t feel like I had a choice, and fifteen minutes later, we were sitting in the living room on either side of the coffee table. My grandmother was old-fashioned. We had an entire tray, laden with a teapot, teacups on saucers, and a pot full of homemade chocolate chip cookies.

“So, do you want to explain to me just what was going through your mind when you ran out there? You had smoke on your heels and you damn near toppled me over.”

I sighed. “I didn’t know Kevin was going to be riding on Aidan.”

She nodded slowly at me. “And you thought you were going to stop him?”

When she put it that way, I could see why she disapproved of my reaction.
