Chapter Eight
Joe stepped out of the way and kept his gaze fixed on Ben. He’d only ever seen the lions shift while in the back of the truck and couple times when Markas had shifted. Seeing Ben switch forms up close both shocked and intrigued him.
Hairs sprouted from Ben’s back. His arms elongated, and his legs shortened as his hands and feet morphed into paws. The hair on his head grew and thickened around his head. His human facial features morphed into those of the lion, but his eyes, the gold, never changed.
Joe dropped to his knees before Ben and reached out to touch the lion, but at the last second, he recoiled. He’d been taught as a child not to reach out to strange animals, especially wild ones, but was Ben really a wild, strange animal? Not really. Still, he wasn’t sure what to do.
Ben inched forward and bumped his head into Joe’s shoulder. The nudge had multiple effects on Joe. His heart raced, and he unballed his fist. The fear seeped out of him, replaced by curiosity. This must be Ben’s way of telling me I’m allowed to touch him.
Joe opened his hand and stroked the fur on the top of Ben’s head. Was it strange for him to be stroking the lion, who happened to be the shifter he wanted to stroke while they were both humans? Probably weird.
The more he touched Ben’s fur, the more comfortable he got with the situation. He leaned forward and rubbed his face in Ben’s mane, breathing in the scent of the big cat. He smells like a housecat. Joe chuckled. He’d never expected Ben to smell like a smaller feline, but he did.
Joe petted Ben, loving the softness of Ben’s fur and the way Ben’s eyes glowed.
If he’d thought he could keep Ben at arm’s length, he was wrong and glad for it. There was something special about Ben—beyond the shifting abilities. There was a connection between them. Ben seemed to understand him, even if they were barely together.
Ben yawned then stood and head-butted Joe. The move knocked Joe over and ripples of laughter erupted from his throat. He flopped onto the carpet and kept laughing as Ben stood over him. The big cat wrapped his paws around Joe’s shoulders and nuzzled Joe’s face. Marking him? Joe kind of liked knowing he was being claimed.
Ben swatted at him then flopped on top of Joe.
“Shit,” Joe gasped. He grabbed his ribs as he took a paw to the chest a second time. “Watch the paws, big guy.”
Ben stepped off him then nudged him with his head and rolled Joe over. He threw his paws around Joe’s neck again and growled.
Moments ago, Joe might have been scared by the noises, but he understood Ben. The big cat was happy. He’d found someone to play with. He turned Joe over and stared into his eyes. Ben rubbed his face on Joe again. He pinned Joe beneath his large body.
Forehead to forehead, Joe got the best look into Ben’s eyes.
