Chapter 11

“Damn. I’ve never seen anyone eat like that. Not even that Renolds kid.” Mannix settled into the passenger seat and fiddled with the stereo. He and Simon had kept it cool around Taner, but it was clear they weren’t going to make this work. If it took that much effort to simply be in a room together, there was no way they were ever going to be happily ever after in three-way bliss.

“You mean the three-hundred-pound linebacker?” Simon drove with all the tedious care of an old lady.

“Yeah. I once watched him eat a whole pizza, but Taner just put that act of gluttony to shame.” Mannix considered the small assortment of CDs and shook his head. Who the hell had such a strange music collection? There were some bands from the seventies, some forties big band stuff, and then there were three hard-core rap disks. “Don’t you have anything decent?”

“I think rather than listen to music we should talk.”

“Well, with this shitty collection, that’s probably a good idea.” Mannix put the book of CDs back where he’d gotten them from. He had a feeling if he didn’t, Simon would pitch a fit. Everything in his apartment, car, and probably his wallet was perfectly arranged. “Do you keep your money in order?”

“You mean in numerical order? Yes. Why? Don’t you?” Simon’s gaze went from the rearview mirror back to the road. Then to the side mirrors and back to the road. Caution, thy name is Simon Sanders.

“If I’m lucky enough to have money, I just toss it in my wallet.”

“But then how do you find the bill you need?”

“I look. It’s not like there are hundreds of them in there.” Mannix turned his attention to the bag of goodies they’d brought. “It’s not like I’m going to have a money emergency where I have to whip out a five-dollar bill or die.”

“Are you making fun of me?”

“Yeah. But I’m doing it in a nice way. You’re just super organized.”

“Thanks. I think.”

“It was a compliment.” Mannix tossed the treat bag aside without taking anything then he peered out the side window, watching the pines roll by. “Did you notice how the more Taner ate, the healthier he looked?”

“I did. I think it has something to do with the mating process.”

“Yeah? Did your dads tell you that?”

“No. Observation told me that.” Simon removed his phone from his front pocket. “Do you want to call your dads and ask them if they have any idea what’s going on?”

Mannix considered the outstretched phone but declined. Simon put the phone in the console between the seats.

“It’s there if you want it,” Simon offered.

“I called them from the payphone at the hospital, but they don’t seem to know any more than we do.” He left out the fact that they were appalled that he’d managed to align himself with a bear of all things. Mannix swore it wasn’t his idea, but they seemed to think he could have avoided the situation if he wanted to. “Frankly, they weren’t very helpful at all.
