Chapter 8

Lark considered refusing to eat until they told him, but that would only punish himself, so he insisted strongly with his eyes while continuing to stuff food into his mouth. While he glared and chowed down, he observed Jude and Chase exchanging glances, and then Jude settled at the table while Chase started making sandwiches. He liked how Chase had spelled Jude in the task of feeding him. Their ability to take turns with the pleasure and then the work gave him reassurance that the three of them might be able to make something more permanent out of their weekend of hot sex.

“We need—I need—to tell you a little backstory.” Jude sighed. “I’m not like other guys, and neither is Chase.”

“Okay.” Lark frowned, but he had a fresh mouthful of ham and cheese that he really didn’t want to spray all over Jude’s handsome face. Without his shirt, he was plenty distracting, and so was Chase. With a sharp shake of his head, Lark took his attention off their massive, muscular bodies and focused on the words pouring out of Jude’s perfect lips. Damn. He’d kept his mind off sex for a grand total of a nanosecond. And then his brain was right back on food. “What the hell is wrong with me? All I can think about is eating and fucking.”

“Yeah, well, that’s what Taner said he went through.” Jude’s eyes suddenly went big. “We should check your blood sugar.”

“Oh, fuck!” Chase practically dropped the knife he was using to slather mayonnaise on the bread onto his foot. “My uncle said to check it every—”

“It’s going to be fine.” Lark set his sandwich down, washed his hands, then went and got his gear. In a few simple steps he had a reading and calculated out what he needed more by what he ate than by what was on the meter. “It’s going to be a bit wonky with this much food going in. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten like this.”

“And you won’t again.” Jude crossed his heart. “It’s just part of your transformation.”

“Into what?” Lark settled back at the table and picked up where he’d left off. By the time he was done with the sandwich Jude had made, Chase had one ready for him. It was just as good. Once he started in on it and nodded at Chase, he went over to make another.

“Well, that’s a little tricky because I didn’t ask for tons of details. But Taner wasn’t diabetic, so it will be different for you anyway.”

“Back up and start at the beginning.”

“I was born of two fathers.”

Lark almost choked on his mouthful. “Through a surrogate?” He’d heard about such things, but he’d never met anyone who came into the world that way.

“No, through them shifting into animals and mating. I was born as a bear cub and then shifted into an eighteen-year-old human.”

Without even being able to see himself, Lark knew his eyebrows had gone about as high as they could go. “Is that right?” Great.
