Noah tamped down the rage until it was under control. Someone was definitely messing with Jenna and this incident showed escalation and intent to cause fear and trauma.

Further escalation wasn’t simply likely, it was only a question of when the next incident would happen.

Noah spent the afternoon with Ryan Ward, installing security cameras inside and outside the barn, then more on his property and on the driveways.

Jenna was annoyed she wasn’t doing it herself, but she had appointments throughout the afternoon.

The woman was an independent as anyone he’d ever met. From what he’d seen, other than the Carstairs sisters, Jenna had lots of acquaintances but no real close friends. Everyone liked her, but she kept people at a bit of a distance.

Something he totally understood.

Until he’d lived with Suzanne and William, he hadn’t been in one place long enough to make friends. Even then, he’d kept it casual, not truly believing he was going to be allowed to stay.

Once the adoption had gone through, he’d become used to being the quiet kid in the background. Something he’d used to his advantage in the army and in the Rangers, but not something he felt the need to be anymore.

He could be himself.

Who was Jenna when she was herself? He figured she was the compassionate woman who kept a miserable old goat happy and safe. The one who’d tended a goose who’d given up her flock to protect her in return.

She might not trust many people, but she trusted animals, and they trusted her in return.

Her inner circle of people appeared to be Flora and Hilde. There was definitely some history there he wanted to learn.

Noah wanted to be included in the list of people she trusted. The ones she cared about.

And he wanted it more than he’d wanted anything for a good long while.

“So, what do you do with a herd of alpacas? I’m going to guess you don’t eat them.”

Ryan’s question almost had Noah falling off the ladder. “They’re not food animals. Once a year they get sheared and their fibres are used for making things. Like mitts and blankets.”

Noah finished adjusting the last camera and climbed down the ladder. Ryan was standing at the edge of the porch and watching the herd.

“Like sheep.”

“Sort of.”

“They’re friendly little guys.”

“Ladies, actually. The only male out there at the moment is Khan. The llama.”

“So, no baby alpacas on the horizon?”

Noah shook his head. “Not yet. Haven’t decided if I’ll get a couple of males or if I’ll use someone else’s for the first year or two.”

“Like a stud animal?”

Noah nodded. There were some alpaca farmers who did circuits with their males. Easy enough to get one in when the time was right. For now, he wanted to stick with the easier-going females until he was more comfortable with the whole farming thing.

“When do they get sheared?”

“Not until next spring.”

“I’d like to see that.”

Noah grinned and slapped the deputy on the shoulder. “I’ll bring you in to help.”

“Sounds like fun. Count me in.”

They watched the animals for a while before Ryan spoke again.
