It was the middle of the night, and normally I would have respected my boys’ need for sleep the night before deployment, but fuck it. I was getting married, and they were just gonna have to deal.

“Jesus, Byrne,” Marky said groggily when I shook him awake. “Where the fuck have you been all week? We’ve gotta be on post in—” he looked blearily at the clock next to his bed, “—less than twelve hours.”

“Get up, dude,” I said, ignoring his whining. I flipped on his light and earning some serious stink-eye. “You need to get your dress blues on. We’ve got shit to do.”

He flipped me off and rolled over, muttering something that would have made me cover my niece’s ears if she’d been in the room.

“Markham,” I said, yanking the covers off him. “For real. I’m getting married. Get your ass out of bed.”

I tossed his dress uniform on the bed, trusting him to pick up on the absence of bullshit in my admittedly crazy-sounding statement, and went to grab Jax. Mistake. I burst into his room prepared for a similar reenactment and instead got an eyeful of oversized tits. My boy had company.

Shit.

I closed the door fast, but apparently I’d still managed to wake him.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Jax whispered, echoing Marky’s earlier attempt at interrogation as he stuck his bedhead back out of the room, keeping the door firmly almost-closed in an attempt to preserve his lady’s modesty.

“Listen dude, later on that. I know it sounds like I’m full of shit, but please get the fuck up. I’m on my way to get married, and I want you to be there.”

Marky stumbled out into the hallway behind me. He was still underdressed, but clearly eager to offer his unasked for opinion on my impending nuptials.

“Byrne… I think you’re taking this gay thing too far,” he said, crossing his arms and giving me his best impression of stern and concerned. “I assume this is the guy you picked up a the bar a couple of weeks ago? ‘Cause I know you’re all about ‘go big or go home,’ bro, but I need to point out that this idea is epically short-sighted.”

“Not to mention that it’s not going to happen,” Jax added, pulling his bedroom door shut behind him as he came out into the hall to join us. “You can’t get married on this short of notice. I checked.”

Marky’s eyes widened and his mouth sort of fell open as his attention zeroed in on Jax, and I’m pretty fucking sure my face looked the same. I loved my boy, but he was most definitely relationship-averse. Any whiff of “commitment” from a chick usually required the immediate use of an epi-pen. Jax was all about the hook-up, for real.

“Why the fuck would you be checking on that?” Marky hissed at him, darting a glance toward the closed door behind our boy. When he didn’t get an answer, he threw his hands up in the air, looking back and forth between Jax and me like he was at fucking Wimbledon.
