I went to the shop just now to buy wine and candles. I wanted to be sure to have everything we could possibly need so that nothing would distract us in our first hours together. When I arrived Máire Mac was reading the paper. She didn’t look up but when I asked for candles and held out a bottle of Chablis for her to wrap she repeated after me as though to make certain she had it right: “Candles is it? And wine? Well now, it’s lucky for some."

Then she began to talk about the weather. She said that it looked fine enough at the moment but she had heard on the forecast that things were to get bad later on that evening.

“I’m glad I’m not having to drive anywhere tonight anyhow," she concluded, "the roads can be fierce at this time of year — if you were driving any distance I’d say you could expect bad delays."

She looked at me then with an expression of vague good» humoured interest and waited for agreement or dissent. But I said nothing. I wanted to be gone from her watchfulness. I wasn’t in the mood for it. I didn’t want any intrusion into the intensity of my expectation.

“Ah well, however long it takes, if you’ve reason enough to be going somewhere I suppose it’s worth it. Good night now, careful on the bicycle . . . " she called after me as I left. I smiled to myself but made no reply. How does she know? It’s uncanny.
