Lily’s breathing was gradually slowing. Jack felt as though he’d gone through a hundred emotions in the past couple of hours: fear, shame, sorrow, and now exhilaration, relief, wonder.

And he was spent.

Lily lay warm next to him. Her limbs were tangled in his. Her soft breasts nestled perfectly against his chest. Her breath came out in short, sweet gasps. He shifted slightly, only to feel her skin slide against his again. He couldn’t get enough of the sensation of her naked body moving against his.

Each moment was a precious gift.

That worry he’d felt about her earlier hadn’t subsided entirely. It was muted as he held her beautiful body in his arms at this very moment, so his world was complete, but a few drops of fear still circulated in his blood.

Jack untangled his limbs from hers. This type of fear wasn’t good. It was the type of fear that came from caring.

But the feelings he was having couldn’t be real. They were only because of the moment, being stuck together like this. They were confused, misguided emotions that swirled within them both, and those emotions had bamboozled them down onto this bed and into each other’s arms.

Lily was single.

Separated.

That’s a good thing, isn’t it, Thorpe? You didn’t help her cheat on her partner.

It was good. And yet...

‘Dinner?’ she said, and pulled her body from his. She grabbed the throw off the bed and pulled it around herself.

She’s self-conscious. Does she regret this?

Did he?

His body was still humming in the aftermath, and he didn’t regret it yet, but he wondered whether he would at some point. She’d just broken up with someone, after all. That was it, wasn’t it?

Lily looked at him properly. He saw her face register the look on his and her mouth opened slightly.

‘It doesn’t have to mean anything,’ she whispered.

It doesn’t have to mean anything.

She’d said it as though they’d just shared a cup of coffee, not earth-shifting sex.

‘I didn’t mean to suggest it did, only that—’

Before he could mangle his words further, she wrapped her palm around his forearm. She knew better than he did that this was the point when he should just stop talking. Neither of them needed to be bound by the words they spoke at this moment.

He looked around for her clothes, gathered her jeans and undershirt. ‘Where are your panties?’

She laughed.

‘I was going to do some laundry. I thought, since we’re stuck here for the foreseeable future, you might appreciate it.’

She had the decency to look contrite. Then her pretty lips pouted into the sexiest grin he’d seen in years.
