Chapter Eleven

Brynn had the driver bring her luggage up to Hortense's shop. Then she planned to have him drop off the wine selection she found for George at No. 1 Savile Row.

A little bell announced their entrance. A woman Brynn had seen on their last visit popped into the hallway.

"Do you have an appointment?" she asked, eyeing the luggage suspiciously.

"No, is Hortense here?"

"Yes, one moment."

Brynn thanked the driver for bringing up her luggage and sent him off to deliver the wine selection. "Then I'll contact you if I need to go anywhere else before the airport." He looked a bit stunned. "The hotel did let you know I'd need you all day, didn't they?"

"Yes, madam. I just figured we would be going more places."

"Oh, it's more for convenience than anything. I'll be in touch. Thank you."

He tipped his hat and exited down the stairs.

Brynn explored the shop, picking up bottles and inhaling their intoxicating aroma one by one. Each scent told a story, some more familiar than others. Fragrance was a story in a bottle, Hortense used to tell her. They bottled memories, and fantasies. Brynn raised another bottle to her nose and inhaled. This one was her story. A story of talent, ability, and promise never realized. Tears filled her eyes.

"Oh, ma chérie," Hortense said, "what has happened?"

Brynn broke down. Hortense shuffled her into her office. A plush space vastly different from the blending rooms. There were rich red velvet fabric covering a low sofa and heavy drapes. The darkness was soothing. She confided in Hortense what had transpired over the last twenty-four hours.

"I knew there was a spark between the two of you. I felt it. Sometimes that's all it takes."

"But he just stood there!" Brynn said. "It was like she was controlling him."

"Some men like that, non?"

"Yeah, no man I'd ever want."

"Well, control can be pleasurable in the right circumstances."

"He has Corinna for that," Brynn replied, blushing at the thought of being in control with Brennan in that way.

Hortense shrugged in a very French fashion. "I doubt she is very good at that kind of control." There was a soft knock on the door. "Oh, I have several custom appointments today, but we will have an early dinner before your horrible flight. I must go. Make yourself at home, chérie."

After a few moments to compose herself, Brynn started to get bored. She didn't have anything to read and she didn't have any appointments to confirm or make. She was completely unscheduled. That was such a rarity that Brynn was at a loss as to what to do with herself. She could wander along the street and shop, but she wasn't in a shopping mood.

Brynn peered around the corner. Everyone appeared to be busy working. She could hear Hortense in the custom blending room. She went down the hall and opened the last door. It was an astounding assortment of thousands of fragrance bottles and several drums of fragrance. This was certainly an improvement over the shop in Camden Town.
