Chapter 16

Lucas

I walk into the apartment using the spare key Paige gave me. I immediately hear her yelling, “I’m not the one who will regret it. Goodbye!”

I rush toward the sound of her voice and find her in the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of wine.

“Paige, what happened? Who were you yelling at?”

“The fucking hacker.”

“The hacker? He contacted you?”

“Yes. He called me just now. Lucas, how did he get my number?” She takes a large sip of wine. “Sorry, dumb question. We know he’s a sophisticated hacker. He probably knows more about me than I know about myself.”

I want to know more details about what happened, but she’s clearly shaken up so that will have to wait. I take the glass from her hand and set it on the counter. I then take her in my arms, pressing her tightly up against my chest, and stroke her hair.

She looks up at me with her eyes a little misty. “Lucas, is he going to come after me now?”

“I honestly don’t know, Paige. I’m sorry I got you into this, and I would understand if you would rather not be a part of it.”

“No!” she shouts as she pushes back from me. “That’s exactly what he wants!”

Just like that, her fierce side comes out. The fire that I’ve come to expect is back in her eyes. In this moment, I realize how much I’ve come to care about this woman and I know I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her.

“I made dinner while you were gone.”

“I know. I could smell it as soon as I walked in and as much as I’d love to have more of your cooking, dinner can wait. I’d like you to tell me about this phone call.”

“I’m more than capable of multi-tasking.” She sasses me as she starts setting the table and putting the food out.

I sigh and resign myself to the fact that this is the price I will pay for falling in love with her. Her feisty attitude is one of the things that drew me to her in the first place.

True to her word, she recounts the details of the call while she puts the finishing touches on dinner.

“So what do you think?” she asks as we sit down.

“It definitely sounds like the hacker. Cryptic tone. No specific threats. Animosity toward me.” I pause for a minute and take a bite of my stew. “This is delicious, by the way. Not that I expected anything less from you.”

She blushes slightly. I wonder how it is that someone so smart, talented, and seemingly confident isn’t used to hearing compliments. Most women I’ve met like that seem to expect compliments.

“Paige, I hate that the hacker is directly involving you but on the other hand, I think it’s a sign that he’s getting nervous. He knows we’re closing in on him and that he’s closer to being caught.”

“What if he’s not worried about being caught?”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe he’s close to achieving his goal and he doesn’t need to worry about being caught.
