Chapter Eight
One Month Later
Missy
My mind is waging war against me. Fog. Turner. Denial. Lust. Love?
Sitting at my desk, I puffed my cheeks full of air, holding my pen to the side as I tossed it back and forth. I had been staring at the same page of a document on my computer for over an hour…and I had only been at work for a little over an hour. Slamming my pen down, I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms indignantly. I was fighting myself.
Work was so crazy, but I couldn’t focus on it for even two seconds. My mind was somewhere else. I knew exactly where it was, even though no one else did. I wanted to see Turner; it had been a month. It had been a really long month too. Between my father being on my back, and then suddenly talking about how he couldn’t figure out why Turner Brownstone hadn’t made any moves lately, I thought I was going to explode.
It was so stupid that Turner was on my mind. That was not how it was supposed to go. I was supposed to sleep with him and that was it. My own little personal payback to my father, one that he probably would have never known about. But there I was, sitting at my desk, wanting desperately to pick up my phone and call him. We had promised though, we knew we were playing with fire.
If it had been possible for us to have a relationship, or continuing whatever it was that we were doing, we would have. It would’ve been easy. But if my father found out about it, he would kill me. It made the whole relationship completely impossible. Turner and I had walked away from each other. I hated it and I knew it was going to be one of those regrets I’d have for a really long time. I hated regrets.
I hummed and hawed for a couple of hours, picking up my phone, putting it down, picking it back up, but never actually dialing his number. I just wanted to talk to him for a second. What harm would it do to send a text message? It wasn’t like he was going to jump out of the phone at me. Finally, I gave in. Patience and concentration had never been one of my stronger characteristics.
I scanned his number in the phone and pulled up a clear text message. Taking in a deep breath, I thought about every single word I would put down. I wrote and rewrote it, and finally I pressed the send button.
It was funny, looking back on it, I was far more scared of getting hurt or doing something wrong, and just didn’t want to start a relationship. I knew I didn’t have much control over my feelings for him. I put the phone down, figuring I could get some work in before he texted back. To my surprise though, he wrote me right back. “I’ve been thinking about you too, a lot.
