Chapter 14

Stephanie came awake slowly. She was engulfed by warmth. She blinked, momentarily confused until she remembered she was in bed with Jake. Her back was turned to him, and his arm was draped over her. She froze. Before she had dozed off, she’d planned to return to her room. It wasn’t a good idea to spend the entire night with him. Waking up in his arms was much too intimate and felt too…right. Afraid to wake him by moving too much, she craned her neck to study him. Her heart melted. He seemed so relaxed, less brooding than normal. His thick lashes fanned his cheeks, and his lips were curved into a slight smile. She wondered if he was dreaming and what he was dreaming about.

Oh, God. I need to get out of here. She started to slide away, her gaze on his face. His eyes fluttered open, and blue eyes connected with hers. Damn. He blinked. Something akin to shock appeared in his eyes. She forced out a smile. “Good morning.”

“Morning,” he murmured, slowly sitting up. He glanced around. Well, this is new, he mused. When was the last time he had woken up with a woman wrapped in his arms and his bed no less? Usually, he disappeared before his companion even woke up. He ran a hand over his face.

“Uh, I should go,” Stephanie said, scooting out of bed.

He turned to her, and she blushed, grabbing the sheet to cover her nakedness. His gaze trailed over her. As surprised and awkward as he felt waking up beside her, he couldn’t deny that she was a beautiful sight. Her long chestnut hair spilled around her shoulders in wild waves, framing her oval face. Her lips were pink and still slightly swollen from his kisses, and her skin was flushed. She looked like a woman who had thoroughly fucked. He felt himself growing hard with the memory of the previous night. He should let her go, but his need to have her again won over. “You should stay a bit longer,” he drawled with a lascivious grin.

Her lips parted, and her eyes widened in surprise. Before she could comment, she was tugged back into bed. Jake feathered kisses along the line of her neck and shoulder. “Jake, don’t you have to go to work?”

“I’m the boss. I can show up anytime I want, or not at all if you want to spend the entire day in bed.”

She giggled. “There’s no way we could do that. You’d be bored within the hour.”

“I disagree. There are plenty of things we haven’t done yet.”

Stephanie nearly groaned. She should be running for the hills. Instead, she found herself wanting to stay in bed with him. His lips found hers, and she kissed him back with fervor. He lifted his head and moved down to take a nipple into his mouth. She gasped and squirmed beneath him. Jake began to kiss his way down her stomach, causing moisture to pool between her thighs. The ringing of his cell on the nightstand broke their passionate haze.
