The release of this video sparked another round of threats against Sarkeesian, upon which she notified authorities and fled her house. Despite posting screenshots of threats against her, Sarkeesian was frequently accused of faking the threats.[52] Further, Kotaku reported in September 2014 that Sarkeesian’s appearance at a Game Developer’s Choice award ceremony was nearly derailed by a bomb threat, though after a sweep, no bomb was found.[53]

The rage against Sarkeesian spawned various Twitter accounts whose only purpose is to degrade her and others who would speak out against sexual harassment. For example, one account boasts a homepage photo of a brain impaled by a dildo linked to the YouTube video “It’s Misogyny—/v/ the musical” with the following description:

This video contains rape! If you don’t like rape, or wish to not be affiliated with rape at the level of not even seeing the word rape, then, uh . . . don’t read this sentence and watch the video. Sexist game dev pigs gonna sexism.[54]
