Sea Point is an in-town beach resort with a fashionable promenade and high-rent, high-rise buildings of all kinds of architectural style. For miles beyond, the road reveals beach after beach alternating with rocky coves. Clifton Bay, with four beaches, is the most popular. The season is at its height from mid-October to mid-March. Along the Atlantic Coast, however, the water is cold all year round. For tolerable sea temperatures, visit the opposite shore of the peninsula and the warmer waters of False Bay.

The road soon turns inland along the slopes of the Twelve Apostles mountain formation. The highway returns to sea level at the big semi-circular fishing harbour of Hout Bay. Although some yachts are moored here, Hout Bay is obviously a working port. At certain times of the year the industrial aspects overwhelm the scenery, when factories producing fish meal and fish oil emit their vapours. Hout Bay is also an important source of a South African delicacy, smoked snoek, and there are some good seafood restaurants.

A favourite excursion from here is by launch to some rocks known as Duiker Island ^ [map], out beyond the calm of the harbour. Hundreds of seals can be seen diving and playing. Cormorants, gulls and oystercatchers perch wing to wing on available spaces.
