Chapter Eight

Dean practically threw Joey into their shared room. He was very clearly pissed off.

Joey supposed that meant he was sleeping on the floor again.

“Jesus Christ! I can’t leave you alone for a single second, can I?”

“I wasn’t my fault!” Joey screamed back. “I didn’t do a fucking thing wrong! He came at me!”

“You don’t ever touch another man’s mate when he’s in heat. You grew up in a wolf pack. Are you stupid?”

Joey wanted to kill him. He wanted to kill this man so damned bad.

Dean chose to ignore the dirty look that Joey shot at him. He crossed his arms. “Whatever. You were lucky I was there to defuse the situation.”

“Like you can diffuse anything.”

“What did you say?”

“Nothing,” Joey said, and because he was pretty sure it would piss Dean off, he sat on the man’s bed. The bed that Joey had been making every morning since Joey had come to live here, regardless of whether or not he was allowed to sleep in it.

Dean had basically taken Joey as his personal slave. Joey was the only human in this pack of wolfhounds, aside from George, but George had a purpose. He was a doctor, and he’d helped Max and the pack escape from their prison while also landing them enough cash to buy a place like this.

Joey had seen how some of the other wolves spoke to George. Most were civil with him, some friendly, but none actually despised George the way a lot of the wolfhounds of this pack seemed to despise Joey.

Phoenix especially hated Joey, and always had a snarl for him whenever he happened to be walking down the halls.

All because Joey was worthless, as far as humans went. His only skills in this house were helping with the cooking and cleaning.

Mostly he did those things for Dean.

Max, the pack alpha, had asked Dean to watch over Joey, to protect him while he lived in the pack.

It was just supposed to be long enough until everyone got used to Joey, but Dean had taken things to a whole new extreme. He was basically forcing Joey to live in this room with him. Because of that, Joey didn’t get his own private bedroom, and for the most part, he slept on the floor.

Sometimes Dean invited him to sleep in bed, but that was only when Dean was gone for the night, or when Joey was so sick that even Dean thought it was unhealthy for him to be on the ground.

And Joey had been getting sick a lot lately. He always seemed to be on the verge of a fever. Even now, after what had happened, he could feel the heat rising to his neck, and the way his temple throbbed as a headache threatened to claim him.

Dean yelling at him was strangely making things worse.

“Are you listening to me?”

“Yes,” Joey said, even though he hadn’t been listening at all.

Joey sucked in a sharp breath, his eyes widening when Dean’s huge palm went to rest on top of Joey’s forehead.
