CHAPTER 14
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
Amos 3:7 NKJV
Saturday morning, Danny looked at the coffee filter as he anticipated pouring in the grounds for his morning brew. “I was nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs for the last interview. Maybe I should drink decaf.” Of course, being a college student, no such substance had ever crossed the threshold of his dwelling. He threw on his jeans, coat, and shoes and jogged to the convenience store across the street from his apartment.
Since his complex had several other students living there, the convenience store stayed busy with young people buying a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Danny grabbed a small container of decaf and got in line. He made a mental note of the things the other kids were buying. The girl checking out in the front of the line had a small package of powdered sugar donuts and a pint of chocolate milk. The girl behind her had a small sized laundry detergent, a two-liter of soda and three bags of chips. After her, and just in front of Danny, was a boy who was buying a small box of breakfast cereal and a half-gallon of milk.
Danny thought about what the store would look like the day after an EMP. All of these kids who lived around him bought what they wanted, when they wanted it. None of them had the forethought to have even a week’s worth of food on hand. The box of cereal, in the hand of the boy in front of him, probably had four large bowls in it. Danny figured it would make about two breakfasts for the boy which was better than what the girl at the front of the line had. Her breakfast would be gone before she made it back to her apartment.
He looked at the glass doors at the entrance of the store and imagined them busted out, the shelves bare and overturned, the refrigerated section empty and nothing behind the counter except lottery tickets.
By the time he reached the cash register, he’d completely freaked himself out. His mind raced thinking of all the possible survival uses for the items near the counter. A cigarette lighter might start a fire to cook wild game or purify water. Duct tape could be used to repair a backpack, a pair of shoes or a busted hose on a car.
“Five dollars twenty-five cents.”
“What?”
“Your coffee, it’s five twenty-five!” The man behind the counter looked at Danny as if he were stupid.
“Oh, sorry. I was daydreaming.” Danny quickly handed the man a ten-dollar bill, took his change and headed home.
Once back inside, Danny opened the decaf and picked up where he’d left off. “If I don’t have any caffeine, I’ll get a headache. Maybe I’ll do half-caf” He loaded the scoop of regular coffee heavier than the decaf. “Slightly biased toward the caf.”
Sure enough, by the time the interview started, Danny was feeling a bit jittery.
