Throughout Mike's first day, Corin had to struggle to focus on work. He was very glad he didn't have sugar and salt in even slightly similar looking containers, or anything else that would've been easily mixed up. When he did make a mix-up, fortunately it was just cranberries for blueberries, which was easily fixed by adding some more sugar and lemon juice to balance the flavors in the breakfast bread.
When Brianna brought him his coffee, she startled him more than he could remember when she spoke to him. "He seems good," she said, staring hard at the floor, not looking at him at all.
"Great," said Corin, unable to think of something better to say.
She moved her hands nervously and glanced up at his face, searching for something. Whatever she saw there made her expression relax slightly. She gave him a tiny nod, brushed hair out of her face, and hurried back to work the coffee machine, a kindred soul of shyness. He was warmed by her consideration, for guessing how nervous he was for Mike and trying to reassure him. The coffee tasted extra good today, lifting his spirits a little bit further.
When Rene came back a little later to grab some extra trays of muffins, he gave Corin a big wink. He was looking particularly good today in his bright blue tennis shoes, skinny jeans, pale purple top, and impossibly high quiff. He also had a touch of eyeliner, making his eyes look dramatic and large, almost model-esque. He rocked the fashionable, modern ambivalent-sexuality look, metrosexual — or possibly just fashionable and gay. Corin didn't know, but he'd always liked Rene, at least until a wink, and the quip that followed it: "Your boyfriend's doing great."
"He's not my—"
Rene was gone with another wink, his grin wide and impossibly straight-toothed. It looked like a smirk. Far too smug.
Just what was he telling Mike about Corin? That he was a shy loser and he could do better? The grin and wink felt far more taunting the more he thought about it, and it didn't take much longer before he'd worked himself into a state of anxiety and nervousness that wasn't even alleviated by how busy he was, keeping up with all the extra muffins that seemed to be needed, as well as the cakes he needed to bake today. The muffins appeared to be selling hard, and he hoped that was a good thing. As insecure and anxious as he was feeling today, it could just mean he was terrible at estimating how much he needed to make.
Damn, if he was too distracted to do his job right because of Mike working here, Jericho could get really mad at him, couldn't he? He redoubled his efforts, getting more flour-covered than ever. He couldn't remember Jericho ever getting angry with him before about, well, anything. But there was always a first time, right?
A few minutes later, when Mike popped back to grab another tray of fresh muffins, he was in no state to face his friend.
