Despite protesting that I didn’t want to go, somehow I was showering and getting ready at six that night. Brett had spoken to Jeannie, whose smile was so broad when she heard about our “date” that you would’ve thought that Brett had offered her a million dollars. Jeannie assured Brett I would be over at their house at the designated time, then nagged me until I agreed that I was going.
Button-up shirts looked dreadful on me, as they hung loosely around my skinny frame, so I donned a black T-shirt and slipped on a black shirt over the top, leaving it unbuttoned. My hair had a kink to it and did its own thing, so I threw some of Jeannie’s gel in it and vowed that if it embarrassed me I would shave it off. It thankfully behaved.
Finally I was ready, and with Jeannie’s blessing I crossed the street just as the three men were coming out. Gavin noticed me first. “Woof, brother!” he cried jovially.
I remembered what Brett had said, so nervously replied, “W-woof.”
They all laughed at me, so I don’t think I quite got the inflection right. Brett slung his arm around my shoulder and dragged me over to his car. “They’re taking Frank’s car,” he told me and opened the door for me. The engine of a vehicle fired behind me as I slipped into the passenger seat. Gavin hung out the window as the car reversed and yelled something about us not being allowed to take the detour. I banged my door closed as Brett chuckled and started the engine.
We were soon on our way, and I took a look at Brett. He was dressed casually, which made me calm down a bit about what I was wearing. He just had on regular blue jeans and a regular cotton shirt. The short sleeves were stretched tight over his biceps, which made me shiver with excitement, and the top button was undone showing me a tuft of chest hair that had my mouth drying in anticipation. He caught me looking.
“Woof,” he told me quietly.
This time I was a bit more enthusiastic. “Woof!” We grinned at each other.
The party was being held at Costas’s house, and it appeared that Costas had plenty of friends. His front lawn was covered with cars, so Brett found a spot a little farther up the street, and we walked back to where we could hear the music coming from. Brett grabbed my hand and I startled, unused to public displays of gay affection. “Relax,” Brett told me. “Most of the guys inside are either gay or bi. There are a couple of straight guys, but you won’t be able to pick ’em. We’re all just blokes, and that’s the way we like it.”
What I walked into was something that blew my mind. Men who were men and not ashamed to flaunt it were stacked wall-to-wall. There were at least thirty guys inside the house and spilling out onto the back patio, and not one of them would fit in at a gay nightclub.
