CHAPTER 7
Being with Tony felt amazing. He’d be sore for days; that was for sure. He had to smile at the memories, but then why did he feel so guilty, so sick to his stomach? He knew why. He was thinking about Chip, and although they’d made no commitment to each other, he couldn’t help but feel as if somehow, he’d cheated on him.
“Pull it together, Peter,” he told himself, as he drove home that evening. The flickering neon lights of the strip were in his rearview mirror. He sped away from Tony’s casino towards his apartment as fast as possible. This time of night left the outgoing lanes much less crammed than those taking people into the city.
He was tired and exhausted for good reason, but he thought he should be happy. He had a way to make extra money; he could pay his rent now; and he’d have extra money to help keep the kindergarten department open. Then why did he feel so badly? Why did he feel so dirty?
It wasn’t just because Tony had just given him a few hundred bucks after sex; after all, Tony made it clear that was totally separate. He guessed it was because this is not where he expected to be at his age and during this phase of his life.
Peter flipped on the radio and tried to lose himself in the repetitive lyrics.
His life was so simple just a week or so ago. Sure, he didn’t make the best income in the world, but he was a just a kindergarten teacher, simple as that, and he loved it. He loved being the moral compass for the kids. He loved waking up in the morning, wondering what would happen next, what funny things they would say. He loved teaching them and he still did, but now everything was different. Sure, he’d be able to make more money than he ever had, and it would be without his parents’ assistance, but this was not the way he had expected to do it.
Independent as he was, there was a part of him that hoped to find a financially stable partner who could afford to allow him to continue to just teach and not worry about the bills. It was silly and maybe old-fashioned, but Peter didn’t see anything wrong with it either.
And now, what was that about with Tony asking him to dinner sometime? Was Tony starting to like him? Was Peter becoming more than just a quick trick to him? And what did it say about him that he was so turned on by Tony’s power and influence and even his sexual demands? And also, how would Chip fit into all of this?
So many questions rattled Peter’s mind. His phone rang so loudly it made him jump out of his skin. He pressed his Bluetooth headpiece before scanning the caller ID.
Shit, it was Chip.
Should he answer it or not? Of course he wanted to: he needed to hear an encouraging voice, and Chip was always so easy to talk to; but talking to him would only make him feel even more guilty.
