Max couldn’t sleep. Which was ridiculous, because he was so far beyond exhausted. He’d finally given in and woken Lena up around three, when Willow had stirred for yet another feed. He’d moved the Moses basket into the guest room while Lena fed the baby, and refused to let himself dwell on how much easier this would be if they just shared his bed again tonight.

He needed actual sleep, and a wall between him and the crying baby. That was only sensible.

So he’d collapsed into bed in his blissfully silent bedroom certain that he’d be dead to the world until morning.

Except...

Except he couldn’t get that moment out of his head. That brief few seconds when he’d honestly believed that Lena Phillips was about to kiss him. Again.

Instead, she’d told him he was a good man—which was absurd, because nobody had ever called him that before. A good negotiator, sure. A good businessman even. But he’d never been a good son, or a good friend, and certainly not a good boyfriend.

A good man?

It had to be the sleep deprivation talking.

But...he’d felt the truth of her words in his heart as she’d spoken, and known she believed them, even if he wasn’t at all sure he did.

He told himself she was just grateful that he’d bought them more time to find Willow’s mum. But that just brought him back to why he’d done that in the first place.

He wanted to pretend it was to keep Lena with him until they could finish what he’d hoped they’d been about to start the night of Finn and Victoria’s party. But that would be a lie—especially since looking after a tiny baby who didn’t sleep was objectively not conducive to seduction. If he’d tried to take Lena to bed tonight he was pretty sure that one of them would have fallen asleep before they’d even got their clothes off.

He’d done it because it was the right thing to do. Maybe his mother’s ghost had been whispering in his ear—not that he believed in such things. But being back in Wells-on-Water, he had to admit that her memory felt closer than ever.

And more than anything, his mum had believed in doing the right thing, not the easy one.

Well, he hoped she’d be happy at his choices since he’d come back to the Manor House. Looking after Willow was not easy. And he had a feeling that resisting Lena’s charms while the baby was in the house wouldn’t be easy, either.

Finally, sleep must have claimed him because the next thing he knew it was morning, the sun was up, and he could hear Lena moving something heavy downstairs.

Bracing himself for another home invasion, he showered and dressed quickly before heading down, only to find the hallway empty except for an ancient-looking, huge-wheeled pram.

He peered into it and found Willow staring up at him. She didn’t look any surer about this turn of events than he felt.

‘Isn’t it gorgeous?’ Lena appeared from the kitchen, two travel coffee mugs in hand.
