ROWAN

Two weeks of the affair. Two blissful weeks of catching Oliver at every opportune moment and devouring him. Shining a UV light in his office would disgust any health inspector. Not to mention all the other secret spaces we’ve found to have a moment of privacy. A broom closet, the break room, even at my desk late at night after we’ve both worked ourselves until we’re nearly catatonic and we’re desperate for release. I had to apologize to Farina for breaking the pot of a succulent on her desk because we got too…rambunctious.

All that is to say, things have been going well.

And, we’ve managed to keep any suspicion at bay. Mostly because our workdays have gone uninterrupted. Oliver still takes all of his meetings and walks the floor while I work my ass off with Briarware.

We have even kept our lunch schedule, which is to say, I never see him in the cafeteria. It’s good to keep our familiarity at bay. And I’ve gotten used to taking my lunchbreaks alone. I have my usual corner table that looks through the dense buildings of Chicago’s downtown. Today is a particularly bright winter day. Below, people bustle with the energy of the Christmas holiday. Carols play over the cafeteria loudspeakers. And tinsel seems to adorn every streetlight.

I’m not much in the Christmas spirit. I’ve agreed to work the holiday graveyard shifts. Farina already had plans to go visit family in Italy and I wasn’t about to take that from her. So, all this Christmas stuff just makes me a little morose.

Not to mention the lettuce is limp in my salad today. But it’s okay. Because I can get fucked whenever I want.

That’s something, isn’t it?

“Can I sit?”

I look up and, to my surprise, Oliver is standing in front of my table with a tray of his own. He dwarfs me and the table with his stature. “Uh, what are you doing here?” I ask nervously.

“I thought I’d take my lunch at a different time today. Is that alright?”

I am silent, my eyes darting around the cafeteria. No one is looking at me but I can’t help but feel like all eyes are on us. At any given moment, I think someone might point at me and go, “You’re fucking the boss!” and that would be absolutely mortifying.

“I can go sit somewhere else if that makes you uncomfortable,” Oliver says when I don’t respond fast enough, gesturing with his thumb over his shoulder to the rest of the cafeteria.

“No!” I reply, all too urgently. “I mean. Yes. You can sit.”

He smiles. “Great.”

Oliver puts his tray down across from mine. He’s picked one of the hot options for today, fried rice and Szechuan green beans. Smells and looks delicious. I should have done that instead of my usual amalgamation of veggies thrown together in a bowl. But none of that matters now because as soon as Oliver sits, I’ve lost my appetite for food.

The only appetite I have is for him.

“I hope I’m not bothering you,” Oliver says softly, unfolding a napkin in his lap.
