Back at the office, Elliot was standing there, holding his briefcase in his sweaty little paws. Elliot was a short man, nearly half my height. Susanne was taller, towering over him in the conference room when we had meetings.

Elliot wasn’t one of those unassuming small men, though. He had a big personality and a loud mouth, and he was running it right now.

“Elijah, you’ve got to get me those expense reports from the last fiscal year. The IRS—”

“Screw the IRS,” I said dismissively, and Elliot paled.

“Mr. Brentwood,” he tried, using my last name to appeal to me, and maybe some other day it would work, but I had too much on my mind today.

“Not today,” I barked, and unlocked the office door. Elliot followed me inside.

“It has to be soon,” he insisted, and he looked so distressed that I put a hand on his shoulder. He was sweating.

“Is everything okay?”

“Other than we’re missing a million in expense reports? Peachy,” Elliot snapped, and I gaped at him.

A million? Dollars?

No wonder he was giving us such shit.

“It’s gotta be a mistake,” I muttered, and God, I hoped so. The stockholders would be pissed. I had the money to cover it, but even though I was rich, I’d hate to take that kind of hit. Not to mention the investigations… If the IRS caught hold of that and accused me of evading tax or fraud… I didn’t even want to think about the consequences.

“I’m sure it is, Mr. Brentwood,” Elliot cooed, suddenly back to his smarmy self.

“I’ll talk to the head of the accounting team,” I promised, but I wasn’t going to talk to Dom at all. I’d talk to his assistant, let him have a day off after last night. Dom wasn’t as far healed as I was, and he deserved some time with his lady.

I hoped he enjoyed the time off, because I certainly wouldn’t be getting any.
