CHAPTER 17

Wendy

It’s a long quiet day without Sean here and with Lee sitting in the office behind me. The office where I so blatantly threw myself at him. I flush for the hundredth time today as I think about how he took me against the wall, right next to the window. No one could have seen us, but still…

A shiver passes through me as my body remembers, once again, how he feels inside of me. Despite knowing how bad of an idea it is, my body disagrees. I want him again, and my mind constantly replays that scenario over and over again. That is, when I’m not stressing about the pregnancy.

It’s been several days since I tested the first time, and I’ve tested twice since then. Both times were even darker than the first two times. I’m undeniably pregnant, and finally broke down and made my first doctor’s appointment yesterday. I also took the leap and scheduled to meet with some landlords next week after work.

I need to get my own place before Andy finds out and all of this blows up in my face, just like he predicted. I still have no idea what I’m going to do and when or if I’ll even tell Lee. For just a moment, back in his office, I was overwhelmed and almost broke down and told him. I ended up passing it off as sadness over my time with Sean ending soon, which ended up leading to him kissing me.

Now I’m a bundle of nerves and confusion, wondering once again where I stand with the enigma that is Lee Johnson. His expression was pained and regretful after having sex, but that’s a hell of a lot better than distant, like he was at his house. I know all of this was unintentional, but I can’t help but wonder why it happened again? Does he care about me? Is there even a shred of possibility that this could all somehow work?

I receive a call close to lunchtime that his last meeting of the day has to cancel. Instead of calling him, like I normally do, I stand up and knock on his office door. He tells me to enter, so I do, standing next to the doorway. Lee’s expression is guarded now, and I feel my heart crack a little in my chest.

“I just wanted you to know that Fuller rescheduled. I’m also about to run to the diner and grab some lunch. Would you like anything?” I wince internally, knowing that last part is a lie. I mean, I’m going now, but I hadn’t planned on doing it. I latched on to a reason for interrupting him that might even have him choosing to tag along.

Lee studies me for a long moment. “A milkshake would be great,” he answers. We each stare at the other for several long seconds before I force a small smile.

“Of course,” I reply, then move out of the office and shut the door. I go to the diner, just as I said I was, and pick up my lunch and his milkshake.
