Chapter Fifteen
Yarom looked around at the small group he was a part of. Emory was shifting restlessly next to him. Angel and Zanis looked determined to pass any challenge while Ludlow looked relaxed and almost uncaring. Yarom guessed it could be because the elf’s brother was standing on the outside of the group watching closely. Dolan was doing some push-ups to warm up.
Wylie raised his hand to get everyone’s iffy attention. A bird flew overhead temporarily, capturing Emory’s and Dolan’s attention.
After clearing his throat and recapturing all of their attention, Wylie smiled at them. “It’s been six weeks since you’ve been here, and now it’s time to add to your recovery training. Boashin and Cherish have placed cans of soda in twelve different places in the woods. They also put four T-shirts out as well. Your challenge is to find one of these items and return here with it.”
“Piece of cake,” Dolan boasted.
“This is too easy,” Zanis said with an air of confidence.
Yarom looked at Emory and whispered, “Not under this burning ass sun.”
Emory nodded. “At least they waited until six in the afternoon. I’d be dying out here at noon.”
“Very true,” he agreed. Knowing Wylie the way he did, this challenge wasn’t going to be as easy as it seemed. Yarom wiped the sweat from his brow and hoped he could find one of the items without too much trouble.
Ludlow glanced at everyone and then at Wylie. “Looks like we’re all ready.”
Wylie raised his hand. “You are free to go hunt the items. Remember, you only need one.”
In a mad dash, they all headed out into the woods. Yarom pushed aside his need to watch every leaf that the wind blew.
A spot of red caught his attention. The can was nestled at the base of a tree. He rushed over to it and picked it up. As he headed back, he wondered what Wylie was up to. Surely the vampire wasn’t making it this easy so that the humans would feel good about themselves. The two humans in their group didn’t need it to be this easy. Angel was a cop, and Dolan was ex-military. Instinct told him the challenge wasn’t over.
Walking out into the clearing, he spotted Emory and strolled over to his friend.
Emory held up a can of soda. “My gut tells me Wylie’s not finished with us.”
“So does mine. The grin on Wylie’s face is not encouraging.” The vampire’s golden eyes had a wicked gleam to them.
Once everyone was back with an item, Wylie clapped his hands and then nodded to Caleb and Tristan, who were carrying sacks with something in them. The two brothers sped away into the trees using their vampire speed.
“You all did a great job. You are going to do it one more time.” Caleb and Tristan returned with empty sacks. Oswin and Orrick walked up to the group, and after a nod from Wylie, they began saying a spell. When they were finished, Wylie grinned rakishly at them.
“What were they doing?” Angel asked, her eyes narrowed with suspicion.
