4.4 EQUAL ACCESS TO AUTONOMY

The conclusion of the previous section establishes that the autonomy-minded state must show equal concern for everyone’s autonomy. By itself, though, that is not enough to give us a positive account of such action which obeys that constraint and gives practical distributive guidance. In what follows, I first show that such an account would be useful, due to the lack of serious attempts to uncover the connections between autonomy and distribution in the literature. I then provide such an account myself, by arguing that to show equal concern we must aim for equal access to autonomy. That is, we should aim for the only inequalities in the actual autonomy of individuals’ lives to be those for which they themselves are responsible.
