“Jesse,” the kid answered.

“Your trainer is in my house,” he said to Ivy. “Do you normally train at five in the morning?”

Ivy smirked. “Actually, yes, we do. Or we did before I had to come here.”

I grimaced, slowly shaking my head, catching her attention over my father’s shoulder. She caught my warning and stopped talking. The snarky attitude was not going to get her anywhere in this situation except crying with a busted lip. Or worse.

“Did her father send you?” he asked.

Jesse nodded his head. “Yes.”

“Why? Why would he send you into the proverbial lion’s den?”

Jesse licked his lip, obviously nervous. “To check on her,” he said, his voice barely above a breath.

“To check on her? To check her wellbeing?”

Jesse nodded. “He wanted to make sure he was okay.”

“You snuck into my house to see if my guest was okay?” he repeated.

“Yes. I swear. That’s all I was doing. I wasn’t trying to break her out or anything like that. I just wanted to make sure she was okay.”

My dad looked over his shoulder at me, smirking before looking at Ian again. “I don’t blame you for your concern for the young lady,” he started. “I mean, look around you. We’re all concerned for her wellbeing.”

Jesse nodded. “I see that now.”

“She’s a delightful creature isn’t she,” he said looking at Ivy. “While I don’t blame you for your concern, I do blame you for sneaking onto my property. I wonder, with my very skilled, extensive security team, how you managed to do it.”

Jesse looked at Ivy before facing my father again. He shrugged. My dad turned to look at me. I had no time to warn Ivy to get out of the way. I knew the look. I stepped forward, but my father was already swinging. He landed a punch into Jesse’s face, and blood spurted from his nose. A second later, he swung again, the punch hitting directly in Jesse’s stomach.

Ivy screamed as Jesse hunched forward. Before the kid even knew what hit him, my dad punched him again in the lower back. The kidney shot knocked him to his knees, and he was left struggling to breathe.

“Stop!” Ivy screamed.

No one moved. Ivy looked to me for help. I didn’t move to help. The kid deserved to be hit at least once or twice. My father stood over Jesse who’d rolled into the fetal position on the floor.

“Does Clearwater have intel on my security?” he shouted close to Jesse’s ear.

“No,” Jesse groaned.

“How in the hell did you get in here? Who helped you? Was it your little girlfriend?”

Ivy’s eyes widened. She looked at me, shaking her head.

“No,” Jesse gasped. “I did it on my own.”

“Bullshit,” my father seethed, kicking Jesse in his ribs.

Jesse grunted, wiping blood from his mouth. “It’s true. No one helped me.”

Another kick to the kid’s head. Ivy screamed again. “Stop! No one helped him!”

“Answer me or you will suffer,” my father shouted in Jesse’s face.

“I swear, I found out how to get in on my own,” Jesse choked out.
