Chapter Five

Casey was at his desk as always, tall cup of coffee and a box of donuts within reach. Nick slid into his chair across from him and smiled. Casey was so busy reading the file he didn’t even notice Nick was sitting there until Nick grabbed for his box of donuts. He laughed when Casey smacked the top of his hand.

“Mine!”

Nick cracked up.

“Suffer.” He grabbed a frosted donut. “So

what’s the plan?”

“I’m going to the college to talk to the

kids at the paper. There are three of them who

have written some pretty nasty crap about football players. Also, got the reports back on the

dorm room. Nothing. Not one shred of evidence

led to any leads. I’m not liking this, Nick.” “I don’t think the kids at the paper are doing this; I ran a background check on all of them. Nothing. Squeaky clean.” Nick closed his eyes, trying to make his brain work. He grabbed his

phone from his back pocket and called Sebastian. “What’s George’s last name?”

“Huh?” Sebastian asked.

“You know, George, your dad’s servant

man?”

“Um, Heine? I think that’s it. Why?” Sebastian asked.

“Just going with my gut, like I should

have all along. Everything okay?”

“You just left, Nick,” Sebastian chuckled.

“I’m fine; I’m introducing Wayne to “The

Hangover”.

Nick laughed. “Have fun!” Nick hung up

and looked at Casey. “Let’s see what George

Heine has on him.”

“We casting a wider net? You think the

dad has something to do with this, don’t you?”

Casey asked.

“I’m not sure, but I don’t have time to

waste while another attempt is made on my

boyfriend.”

Casey arched a brow. “Soooo - now he’s

your boyfriend?”

“Yes, he is.” Nick sat down and pulled his

laptop open. “Get to work.”

They’d been at it for more than an hour

when Nick heard Casey swear under his breath.

Casey looked up just then, his lips drawn in a

tight line.

“Guess who owns a butcher shop?” “Fuck! I knew it!” Nick grabbed his keys.

“Let’s go get the damn warrant.”

Nick was kicking himself the whole

drive. He’d been so fixated on saving Sebastian,

he hadn’t been thinking clearly on who could

have been harassing him. It made sense: George,

the faithful servant, was trying to scare Sebastian

straight, so to speak. It was George’s way of protecting his boss’ assets.

Nick sighed heavily and banged his fist

on the steering wheel. Casey had been quiet for

most of the drive, but now he spoke up.

“Stop beating yourself up, Nick.” “I should have seen this! Why didn’t I see

it?” Nick shouted.

“Because you’re in love and distracted,”

Casey said quietly.

“Yeah? Well then I should have been

looking out for my man, instead of falling over

myself. I’m a cop for fuck’s sake.”

“Let’s just get this guy, okay?” Casey sat

forward in the seat. “Right there, that’s the

house.”

Nick pulled to a stop in front of a ranch

style home. It wasn’t big, and a two car garage

sat off to the side. Nick motioned to Casey and

they both walked over to the garage. Nick peeked

inside. There were sheets or some kind of

blankets over the window, but Nick could see a

black car inside, along with a silver one. Nick

tried the garage door, it wasn’t locked. Nick raised a brow at Casey and they opened the door a crack.
