Chapter Seventeen
“Keep the change,” I mutter. Some asshole has locked the passenger door in a special way and I fumble with it until the cab driver leans over to release me. He gives me a knowing look. Yep, guilty and unrepentant. I left Nikki lying stretched out in her bed after we snatched a few hours sleep. She rolled over, smiling lazily as she waved goodbye then closed her eyes again. It was perfect. Thanks for the sex, please lock the door behind you and catch you never.
Considering my lack of sleep and the amount of alcohol I consumed last night, I feel pretty good. I’m squinting in the sharp morning light and it takes me a few attempts to get the key in the lock. On second thought, perhaps I’m not quite as together as I thought. I shoulder my front door open.
The sex was good, borderline great, but I don’t feel as rejuvenated as I’d imagined. The raw physicality and the pleasure of having someone so close again helped, yet I don’t feel everything is now magically all right. A childish hope, to think everything would be fixed if I could just move on physically. Maybe it’s because it wasn’t the person I wanted.
I unzip my boots and leave them by the door. My jacket and keys go on the kitchen table and I empty my pockets of a handful of coins, my license and debit card. My mouth feels like a desert. A desert with gin-tasting sand. I reach up, open one of the cabinets and pull down a glass. The glasses are sitting haphazardly, not in their respective groups. Wineglasses, water glasses and small tumblers. They are all together, but they should be separated so I don’t have to waste time trying to find the right kind.
Irritation tightens the skin on the back of my neck as I pour myself cold water from the fridge. Fuck it, I need to fix them. I leave the glass in the sink, then pull all of the remaining glasses out and set them on the counter behind me. I fling the cabinet beside it open and snatch at the coffee mugs, setting them out as well. All Victoria’s favorite mugs are gone.
The shelves are dirty, so there’s no point in putting things back until I’ve wiped the surface down. I wet a dishcloth and climb up onto the bench underneath the cabinets and clean them out. While I’m up here, I may as well wipe out the next cabinet over where plates and bowls are. It snowballs from there.
After an hour, everything is out and spread around the kitchen, on the table, the benches and even the floor. At least the pantry is empty, so all I need to do is remove the thin layer of dust. It seems sort of pointless given I won’t put anything in there for a few months, but I do it anyway. I sort and rearrange things into piles ready to be put away again but get no further than that.
