An ABKCO managed company
I work for Apple. Apple is an ABKCO Managed Company, or so the advertisements for Apple tell us. Apple pays me, therefore ABKCO pays me. The head of ABKCO is Allen Klein of New York, New York. Allen Klein is a businessman. He has had dealings with a guy called Tony Calder who worked as a partner for Andrew Oldham. The three of them managed the affairs of the Rolling Stones. Oldham & Calder left the Stones scene, but Klein stayed. Oldham & Calder ran Immediate Records, which went bust. I know Calder and I like him. Calder sees me one morning, a year or so ago (he lives near me; I live in Sunningdale, he lives in the next village, which is Virginia Water), and he says he will give me a lift to work in his Morgan. I usually go to work by train, but I say ‘OK Tony’, and I travel to town in his two-seat Morgan with him and his wife. Clearly, there is one too many people in this car, but what the hell. Tony has something on his mind that is why he is taking me to work in his Morgan.
He says: ‘Allen Klein says you are in his way. Allen says you are blocking him from meeting the Beatles and doing business with them.’
I am amazed. I say, ‘I never give Allen Klein a thought from one year to the next. What is the guy talking about, me being in his way?’ Tony says, ‘Allen couldn’t accept that you don’t give him a thought. His ego wouldn’t stand it. He thinks he is on everybody’s mind all the time.’
I say: ‘Too bad.’ Tony says: ‘Allen thinks you are sore at him because he gave you a verbalising in his office in 1966.’ I say: ‘He is an asshole for thinking that.’
But true enough, Klein did give me ‘a verbalising’ in 1966. It happened like this. Andrew Oldham comes into the Gaiety Delicatessen on Sunset Strip where I did a lot of my business in 1966. He takes me from my table to a quieter table. He says: ‘Would you like to handle the Stones’ press?’ I say, I would, because I am a sucker for saying ‘Yes’ in 1966. He says: ‘OK. Come to NY, NY on Saturday and meet the fellers. Also you can meet Klein at the Sullivan Show next day and do the deal. What will you want?’
I tell Oldham I’ll ask for a thou a month. He looks very pi and I go to NY and I meet the Stones, one or two of whom I half know and we get on like a supermarket on fire. Next day I go to the Sullivan Show and there is this short fat man in a seersucker shirt and it is Allen Klein. He comes on very cool, like he knows all about me but he is not going to let it be any big thing.
