“Well, there’s always Murray Head,” I said. “I could check what he’s up to.” Murray Head was an Island artist with whom Steve had wanted to work since 1972, when they met during the mixing of Nigel Lived.

“Yes,” said Steve. “Great idea. How soon can you find out?”

I went off to ring Toad Hall. An answering machine said, “Can’t talk now. Ring after 7.” Returning to the control room I told Steve, “He’s not around right now. I’ll give him a ring in a couple of hours. What do you want to do now?”

“Okay. You and Richie take the evening off, but ring me later.”
