NINETEEN

I did not go home to change my clothes because I thought I looked official enough. I was beneath a black sutt and bow tie. My shoe was still well polished and shiny. My teasing abilities was still feeling fresh because I had rarely used it that day.

I waited downstairs beside the car with Sandra even though she practically avoided any conversation with me.

When Morgan came down, we headed to her house first where she wore a blazer and red gown with matching high heels.

The trip to old Trevor Truelove’s house was bumpy as he chose to host the party at his favourite house in the country side. I had always longed to take cocktail snacks and made mention of it since it was going to be served at the party.

Cars were already there and the party had just slowly started. I can say, the atmosphere was very serene!

We got in with different greetings directed at us.

“ Ms. Morgan. I am so glad you made it,” Stewart Truelove, the son of Trevor said. “ Old Trevor will be so delighted to see you.”

She gave a simple answer. “ I am so glad to be here.”

There were other greetings directed mainly to Morgan and I watched the MC moved to the podium.

“ Attention, ladies and gentlemen,” he called for order after clearing his throat.

All or perhaps most eyes fixed on him that instant and I might be imagining it but I thought he looked a little uneasy. Even my mom confirmed that I always stuck out for my right no matter how big or powerful the person was. She got so scared I might get myself in trouble; and I did. I was never going to forget that day.

You are thinking it through again, Todd. Focus on the party, that is what you are here for.

Now I was aware that the MC had started to speak and the fear was not on his face anyway. Infact, he was so fluent…

“… I will like to call the celebrant out to give a heartfelt speech of thanks for your presence. Mr Trevor Truelove!”

The latter was a sprightly man who had everything to make him look young; stature, style, except for his wrinkled face… And maybe his voice.

“ Good evening, everyone,” he started slowly as if necessary. Surprisingly, his voice was not a bit shaky. “ Seeing you all gather at this old man’s house, despite your tiredness, schedule and willingness is so much a great happiness for this old man to express in words.”

I noticed old people used ‘this old…’ and now began to wonder why. I became aware of myself again and cut off my thinking to focus on the rest of the speech.

“… I know what you all risk to be here
