Plumbing

All aquaponic systems will also have plumbing which is responsible for moving the water throughout the system. The plumbing requirements vary depending on the design of your system.

Bacteria

The final component that must be present in every aquaponic system regardless of its design is the bacteria that convert the animal waste from the rearing tank into the nutrients the plants feed on. This process is called nitrification and it involves converting ammonia into nitrates. Ammonia is the main byproduct of the fish in your system but if the concentration of ammonia in the water gets too high, it will kill the fish. If you think of it as the fish version of carbon dioxide it is easier to understand.

The plants can use the ammonia produced by the fish directly but when beneficial bacteria are present to break the ammonia down into nitrates and nitrites, the plants can use it more easily.
