Case study

The McNabb family are a single parent family living in the UK. They used to be a nuclear family, but the father is an alcoholic and became physically violent towards the mother and children on a regular basis. As a consequence, the mother decided to leave her husband and take the three children with her. This happened when the children were aged 9, 7 and 5 years. Although the family do not have as much income, the atmosphere in the family is very positive as Mrs McNabb and her children have a close emotional bond. Prior to leaving her husband, the children dreaded their father returning home. He would subject his wife and the children to terrifying ordeals of rage whenever he was drunk. Although the three children do not have a father in the household, they are emotionally secure. The children appear to give their mother as much emotional support as possible and they have no wish to see their father.
