Chapter 3
“You will not force me back to bed, will you?” Michael dreaded the soft confines of that mattress more than he wanted to admit. Nothing was in his reach from there and the quiet was very disconcerting. In the collective home of his kin, noise was all around him. Beautiful sound permeated every action and thought, a background symphony as he had come to understand it.
Until human contact was a constant with the Host, Michael had the opinion the music that was part of his very being was the same with their mortal counterparts. When Gzrel returned to them as the first to walk among humanity, Gzrel had cried in great joy to hear the cosmic symphony again.
Michael had been confused at the incident, but once Gzrel explained how it was so difficult to hear that melody, except when humans made music. It was a revelation.
“No, of course not.” Adam looped Michael’s arm through his own and started walking down the long hallway. “I thought I should show you the rest of the house, as you wanted earlier.”
“Yes, please.” It was a wonderful idea. He felt the rest of the household scattered through the structure and with some concentration, the knowledge of the house was easy to pluck from the mind of any one of them. However, Michael wanted to see it with physical eyes. Such a novel experience, to be rendered in flesh and blood.
Adam took him to the end of the hallway that contained Adam’s bedroom. There was one door at the end, plain dark wood set into the pale creamy wall. It was shut and Adam did not move to open it, much to Michael’s disappointment.
“This is Levi’s room and workshop.” He saw the look on Michael’s face and chuckled. “I know you want to see it, but Levi’s not in the mood to have guests in there.”
“What is his workshop?” Michael asked, intrigued. It covered for the bigger question. What was a workshop?
“He makes clothes.” Adam shrugged and eased him around. “The stuff we put on so our junk isn’t hanging out for the world to see.”
“Ah,” Michael said. How interesting. Were there a great many ways to wear fabric? “Are all clothes like these?” He gestured down at the simple shirt that covered his front and soft pants that Adam had dressed him in at some point during his convalescence. They were comfortable against his skin and he liked the sensation, though he could not fathom the need for the coverings.
“Some are, but many aren’t.” Adam guided him down the hall a few steps to another door, this one newer than Levi’s. “This is Danny and Gabriel’s room.”
A firm push revealed a sparsely furnished room, but not as bland as Adam’s. There were a few decorations, people on paper behind glass and edged with wood, all in green and tan. A blue bed and a dresser made of dark wood stood stark against cloud white walls. The rest of what humans used, clothes and shoes and such, were hidden away in the dresser and perhaps behind the doors in the far wall.
