Chapter Three

Emma was carrying the blanket and Sophia held the basket of goodies the cook had prepared for them. It was a community Thanksgiving picnic and there were likely to be a few vendor carts selling their baked ham and turkey, biscuits, potatoes, delicious treats, sweet drinks, and fruit concoctions among other delicacies. Emma always like to have something from home to bring along as well. She often shared the cookies and treats her cook provided with other members of the community. This being a special occasion, she decided to bring double the amount she usually brought. It was a fairly warm day. She was happier when it was warm but enjoyed the cool weather, too. She wasn’t picky. She was easy to please.

They got to the park to see that it was already filled with happy, smiling faces. People were talking, walking around in their large winter coats, the women with bonnets to keep their ears warm, the men with hats and scarfs. Vendors were set up all around, as Emma had suspected they would be, selling their wares to the crowds gathered in front of them. Children were running around holding balloons and large stuffed animals, laughing, and talking loudly, seemingly oblivious to the crisp air.

“Looks like the fun has started already.” Sophia smiled at Emma. “This should be nice. It’s a bright and beautiful day, even if it is a bit chilly. We will get a lot of sun, which should help it warm up a little. I’m glad you brought your big hat. You would have a very red face later if you didn’t.”

“That’s what I thought, too. Imagine getting a burn when it’s so cold out.” “The sun burns with the same brightness even if the air is cold.”

“Sometimes I think it is worse.” The two girls picked a comfortable spot on the green grass and Emma laid out the blanket. “Do you want to get some tarts or pastries or ham or turkey from the vendors?”

Sophia shook her head. “Not yet. I know Cook has put some delicious fresh baked cookies in here. I think they are still warm. I didn’t have a big breakfast. I think I will eat a few now.”

Emma smiled. “Don’t eat them all before I get a chance to have one or two. But do let me know who has cooked their ham the best. I do love good baked ham.” “Oh, me too. And I won’t.” Sophia said the words in a way that implied she just might eat them all in one sitting. She winked at Emma.

“Oh you.” Emma laughed. “I guess I better get some now before you do have a chance to eat them all.”

Sophia laughed, too. “You should at least have a bit of turkey. I’ll try out the ham and see who has the best to offer. We want to get some while it is still hot, you know. In this air, it is likely the meat will cool quickly.”

Emma nodded. “You are right about that.
