Specific Help for Stressed Parents of Young Children

Though implementing a broader mission, NFP and EHS measurably improve parenting. Evidence from the Early Head Start program indicates a small but significant improvement in parental nurturance due to the program (Love et al., 2002). For NFP, improvements were found years out from the end of the actual intervention, so we know that parenting interventions can work, and work effectively. Many excellent programs for young children also provide some type of support for parents, whether educational parenting classes, informational get-togethers or therapeutic group support, or opportunities for casual sharing of information and advice. Most excellent preschools share ideas with parents for continuing the classroom learning themes at home, with some tips on keeping the activity stress-free.

Do these types of programs have any real impact on parenting, and on children’s chances for success? This is unclear. But I would guess that the answer depends on the interplay between the level of stress in the family, the level of the parent’s need for support, and the quality and intensity of whatever parenting support the program offers. To truly improve the lives of children living in families with real need for parenting support, my bet would be on the highest quality, most intensive and long-term parenting program possible.
