The Holy Trinity

As the days and weeks ticked over, it didn’t matter how long I had been part of the company at War Horse, there would always be a group who had been there longer, and would carry on to eclipse my stint. They were always in the building before the acting company arrived, they always left it after we’d gone off home. If anyone was responsible on a daily basis for keeping those chins up and something like a smile on our faces, it was the holy trinity of ASMs (Assistant Stage Managers) Sammy, Holly and Ralphy. The Stage Manager is in charge backstage and the Deputy Stage Manager is sat up in the control room at the very top of the auditorium ‘calling the show’ (cueing all the sound, light and projection effects as well as giving some actors cues to enter the stage). The ASMs have to run around backstage basically doing everything else required to make the show run smoothly. In a previous draft of this book I wrote a list of all the things they had to do in the course of an evening and it was so ridiculously long (and boring) that you’re just going to have to take my word for it and accept that it was a lot.
