CHAPTER 14
The children seemed to be extra noisy and lacked the ability to follow even the simplest directions. Both Emily and Anika were losing their patience with the kids. Some of this impatience was caused by the stress of trying to put on a false front when their relationship was in turmoil. Since the threesome, Matisse had been keeping close watch on the women. Emily and Anika tried, with difficulty, to be nothing more than friends now; a task easier said than done. It was taking its toll on their relationship.
“Karianna! Come here!” Anika raised her voice, exasperation and frustration seeping into her words. “I have to get angry before anyone will listen to me!” Anika added, just as Karianna arrived.
“I’ve asked you again and again to stop leaving your shoes out. You’ve lost TV for the night now!”
“But Mom! That’s not fair!” Karianna whined, jumping up and down as she came downstairs from Claire and Julia’s room, where they were playing.
“You’re seven! Quit acting like a baby! Jumping up and down isn’t going to get you your own way! Just go!”
“No!” Karianna defiantly crossed her arms and pouted, looking up at her mom through long eyelashes, red-blonde hair hanging in her face.
“Go! Before I get really angry!” Anika yelled at Karianna, pointing her finger up the stairs.
“Karianna, you have to be respectful. That’s enough.” Emily touched Anika’s arm to calm her. Emily meant the touch to reassure Anika, to affirm her support.
“Fine!” Karianna yelled, stomping up the stairs as loud as she could.
“No one listens until I get angry!” Anika reiterated again, throwing her hands up placing them on the counter, pulling away from Emily in the process.
“You don’t have to get angry,” Emily told Anika,
“Thanks,” Anika spat sarcastically, avoiding eye contact.
Emily felt tears welling in her eyes and fought to hold them back. She turned to busy herself at the stove. I just want you to be happy. I thought I was helping. I’ll back off. I’m sorry.
She did not want Anika to see her on the verge of tears. Each time that happened, Anika shut down further. Emily’s emotions often betrayed her by displaying exactly what she was feeling, whether it was by crying when she was upset, or becoming flushed when she was turned on.
Right now, though, Emily was feeling helpless. She had tried on several occasions to talk to Anika about some of her anger issues. Each time she did, Anika shut down and refused to talk. Later, Emily would receive a text or an email from Anika, explaining herself; Anika needed to work through it, but any headway seemed nonexistent.
Emily concentrated on the music in the background. Rihanna sang, “...funny you’re the broken one, but I’m the only one who needed savin’.” The right song never failed to come on while they were having a fight.
“Anika,” Emily pleaded with her back to Anika. She prayed she sounded calmer than she felt.
“No. Just don’t. You don’t get it. I don’t need this with you too.” She picked up her phone and started scrolling through Facebook.
