· Primary hypothyroidism is the most common type of hypothyroidism in the Jack Russell breed. A Jack Russell that exhibits this ailment will do so for one of two reasons. Either the dog is suffering an attack of antibodies on its own thyroid cells, as in autoimmune thyroiditis; or, if no antibodies are found the dog will be diagnosed with idiopathic thyroid disease.
