Chapter Six

Jack sat in stunned silence. It was true. Dex was sick. Psychotic like they said on the news. Why hadn't the doctor told him? Tears ran down his face.

"Jack, are you still there?" "You need help, Dex. Please, turn yourself in."

"Jack, I'm not Dex. My name is Sean Delaney, Captain Sean Delaney of the United States Air Force. They killed my entire family, Jack. They've killed yours, too."

Air Force now! Good God.

"Dex, baby, listen to me. You're not a Captain in the Air Force, honey. You lost your job and I think now it did things to you… you fell into a depression and I didn't even notice. I blame myself. How could I… Dex?"

The line went dead.

"Dex! No, don't hang up. Please." Jack put down the phone. He began to pace. Should he call the police? What if they shot Dex? No, he couldn't let him get shot. Maybe he'd call back. He should have done what Dex wanted, met him somewhere. Maybe he could have talked him into getting some help.

His mind suddenly raced back to the forearm in the photo. The tattoo. A military tattoo. Air Force.

What the hell was going on? He couldn't believe the man he'd spent his adult life with was gone. When did they kill him… how?

He had to think. Something bigger than all of them was at play here. If his parents were dead too, then he and Nicky were targets. But why?

The first thing he had to do was contact Applegrove Orphanage and ask them… no, beg them to tell them what they knew about Nicky's origins. Over the years, he and Dex had given them significant donations. Dex had even helped them refinance their property right before he lost his last job.

Dex had once accused Jack of trolling the place for lost children they could adopt.

"They're not pound puppies," he'd said. "We can't give them all a home." Jack had bristled at the time but it was true. He'd wanted more kids. Dex had been happy with one. Oh God. An error message on Applegrove's landline. "We're sorry. You have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service. If you feel you've reached this recording in error, please check the number and try your call again."

He picked up his parents' house phone. It gave a busy signal. He tried calling their phone from his cell phone. He had a weird feeling it would say the same thing.

It did. He suspected that every number he tried would repeat the same error message.

And then his cell phone no longer had service.

Oh, spiffing. Wait. He had his laptop. He could email. The manager of the orphanage always returned emails in a timely fashion. He retrieved his laptop from the bedroom he was sharing with Dex and fired it up in his father's study.

He had a portable Internet device that allowed him to work online wherever he went. It took a couple of minutes but he managed to gain access to Applegrove's site.
