There has been a tendency to treat housing for older people as a special case, exempt from energy targets and other environmental targets. But this is changing, and rightly so. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face and there are many good reasons why this sector should lead the way in terms of sustainability – not least the fact that the homes and supporting spaces are intensively used, often by vulnerable people. Passive measures remain the best approach.
