Pattern Picking

Now you’re going to enter the world of flngerpicking, or fingerstyle guitar. People use these words different ways, so there’s no point in looking for consistency. What’s consistent about the style you’re going to be using is that it’s based on orderly patterns of movement in the picking hand.

Fingerpicking, as I and others use the term, refers to a style of playing in which the thumb constantly alternates between two bass strings while the fingers play notes on the high strings. You’ll be applying this style to melody playing starting with track 48. In the meantime, learn a simple accompaniment pattern. It should sound familiar. You’ve heard Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Paul Simon, and hundreds of other guitarists all play their versions of this pattern—or even the exact pattern we’re about to learn.
