I didn't want to call my parents. Or, I did. But every time I picked up the phone (an old-fashioned landline contraption that Justin—for some reason—had in his condo), I stared at it blankly until I set it back on its cradle. Just like the emails I'd started to get from Devon. At first, I read them, but I didn't reply. Then, I stopped reading them. Then I stopped opening them. By my second trimester, I didn't even read the subjects of his emails anymore. I sent him an IM every now and then, trying to allay his concern. He seemed to think I'd been kidnapped or something. I tried not to examine my urge to let him believe this. It was wrong, but the truth was just too difficult.

Justin's relative technophobia meant he never questioned the fact that I didn't own a cell phone, and even seemed blissfully unaware that so many others possessed them. I supposed taking in all those extra details all the time made it harder to prioritize their importance. He saw no difference between an adult on an iPhone in 2015 and a twelve-year-old on a Gameboy in 1997.

As far as he was concerned, it was all intolerably young. I showed him episodes of Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones—all the shows I liked that I thought he might enjoy too, but I found that, increasingly, I too could see through everything. Like TV was just a poor puppet show, and I could see all the strings. I didn't even need my glasses anymore to see them, thanks to our baby's grasp of my senses.

"But if you could still wear them sometimes," Justin teased one night as I set aside my glasses in their case while I read a book by the fire.

"What for?" I shrugged, yawning and stretching out my limbs before rearranging them around my abdomen. I'd never carried this much weight before, and my back was starting to feel the strain. Justin, sensing my needs like always, arranged a lump pillow behind me.

"You look sexy in your glasses,” he said bashfully. Despite his sexual prowess, and demonic lust, Justin remained adorably coy about sex.

"Oh, really?" I asked.

Reaching over slowly, I picked up the case. I opened it, excruciatingly slow, and extended the familiar arms. Gently, I slipped them onto the bridge of my nose and brushed the errant curls from my eyes. Then I leaned back on the couch, setting down my book. I held his gaze as I reached down into the silk pajama bottoms of his that I was wearing, my slender hips bones jutting out stark against the round bulge of my belly.

Justin crept toward me, stealthy as a big cat, and settled in the nook of my reclining legs. He reached out with grasping, cool fingers to stroke my bump, gazing lovingly, wonderingly, at the taut skin, the delicate stretch marks I knew I ought to moisturize, the increasingly shallow dip of my navel. He pressed his ear against my flesh and held a finger to my lips as I laughed in protest.
