Chapter Eighteen

Abby

“Are you okay?”

I look at Meredith sitting next to me and try to smile. “I think so. I just wish I knew what was going on. I mean, why did they need so many guys to come and pick us up? Couldn’t they just call and ask us to come here?”

“Well, I’m glad you haven’t gone mute.” Meredith laughs, which in turn causes me to join in.

Once our giggles die down, I lift my feet up on the couch cushion and wrap my arms around my legs, resting my cheek on my knees. I let out a deep breath. “I don’t handle confrontation well. I tend to try and shut out everything, and I guess that’s what happened.”

“Smoke did come into the house kinda on a rampage,” she says as she rolls her eyes. “He was a little bit dramatic. I forgot to lock the door when I took out the garbage. It was only like five minutes before they got there. I knew someone was coming to take you to work.”

“It’s not your fault.” I squeeze her knee. “I just overreacted like usual.”

“Hopefully, they come out of Church soon.” Meredith looks over her shoulder at the doors behind us. “I really wanna know what’s up. Do you have any idea what it could be?”

“No clue.” I spin on the couch and kneel to look behind us. “Whatever it is, they’re taking forever.”

“In my time around the club, I’ve come to realize Church usually goes down one of two ways.” Meredith lifts her pointer finger. “One, if it’s their weekly Friday meeting, it goes by fairly quick. Or two,” this time, she’s got two fingers up, “if it’s an impromptu situation, it takes for-ev-er.” That, she drags out to make the word sound super long.

Just as I’m about to sit back on my butt, the noise level from inside the closed room grows louder and the doors open. Bikers of all shapes and sizes pour out the double doors, first stopping to grab their phones from a black box sitting on a tiny table, being watched by a younger Hispanic man.

I found it quite weird that a few of the guys in leather weren’t in the meeting, but when I see two walk past with a patch on the back of their vest that says ‘Prospect’, I figure it’s a theme that whoever they are, aren’t allowed in.

“What’s a Prospect?” I ask Meredith.

“Prospects are bikers trying to earn their way into the club. It’s like a probationary stage. They’re the club’s minions and have to do whatever they’re told, like cleaning toilets, washing dishes, or anything the Brothers don’t wanna do.”

“Kinda like a glorified gopher?”

“Pretty much.”

“Hey there, gorgeous.” I look up and see Haze smiling down at me. He drops a kiss on my forehead. I got distracted watching all the other Brothers, I missed Haze and Smoke walking over.

“Are you feeling better?” Smoke leans on the armrest next to me and wraps an arm around my back, tugging me into his embrace.
