Chapter Eighteen

Meg was giddy with excitement and bounced on her bed, unable to keep still. Her plan worked. She’d made a difference. She wasn’t propping up the work of someone else. She did it on her own, for the good of someone else, and it worked.

She paced to the window and looked at the crashing waves. Her mind raced over possibilities—restaurants, movies, strolls through town. It wasn’t easy, and it wouldn’t happen overnight, but there was a future outside these walls for Simon to grasp. She, more than anyone, knew what it was like to be imprisoned, knew how rejuvenating freedom could be. Little by little, she’d help Simon reenter the world, to relearn the benefits of a community, to expand his horizons.

And now he’d be able to work on the land development project like Claire wanted. And his gardens. Oh, he’d complete his gardens, and they’d be beautiful. He’d find himself, he wouldn’t be lost anymore. He’d be happy.

She couldn’t wait for their next outing.

Simon walked into his office. The sight of it almost made him ill. Everything he needed was here to ensure he never had to see anyone again. All the latest technology, all the gadgets, and none of them made him happy.

Opening a hidden panel within his desk, he removed a photograph of him with his parents taken before the fire. He didn’t recognize himself anymore. When he’d awakened in the hospital and taken one look at his face, he’d shouted in horror. Despite what the nurses and doctors told him, and no matter how much plastic surgery he might agree to, he’d never look the same. When he’d walked the halls of the hospital and rehab and saw the horrified or pitying glances from other people, he realized he was better off keeping away from everyone. When a group of friends surprised him with a visit, their reactions seared themselves into his brain and affirmed his decision.

But then Meg came along. She’d provided companionship and friendship and…more. Maybe. He could fall in love with her if he let himself. He couldn’t think of anyone he’d rather be with. Sex with her was amazing. She’d given him Claire, and her husband as well. She’d taken him to the library. His venture in public, and the walk through the botanical gardens, gave him enough inspiration to help him work. After poring over the book he’d borrowed, he had more ideas than he’d had in months, which helped him further develop his plans for Claire. Maybe his feelings for Meg helped, too. They crept in when he didn’t expect them to, brightened rooms when she was in them, improved the taste of food when they shared a meal, and lightened his steps when they walked together. Jed said he needed to open up. As usual, Jed was right.

Still, his attempts to go out in public weren’t without pitfalls. He avoided everyone at the botanical garden. And the crab cake shack? He couldn’t exit his car. And when people did see him, they still reacted badly.
