Emily

Of all the places Spencer could have been, why did we have to see him here?

I really don’t want to speak to him, but he doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere. Before I can say anything, Ben intervenes.

“Hi, I’m Ben.” He holds his hand out to Spencer, and he looks at it for a few seconds before taking it in his a little too firmly. Ben doesn’t falter. “How do you guys know each other?” Ben asks Spencer, who glances at me before responding.

“Emily and I were dating for a while, but it didn’t really work out. What was it you said, Emily? You weren’t really in the right head space to be dating anyone right now?” His intense gaze never waivers from mine, until I can’t stand it anymore. I look away from him to find Ben staring directly at me.

How the fuck did my night turn to shit so quickly?

“Ben is an old friend of mine, and we’ve recently reconnected. This happened after you and I stopped dating, so I really hope there’s no hard feelings between us,” I tell him honestly, hoping that he’ll back off—go find his date and leave us alone.

Ben signals the waiter over, presumably to order us some drinks. I’m pretty sure we're going to need them after this. Just when I think I can relax, Ben addresses Spencer without even looking at him.

“If you’ll excuse us, Spencer, we’d like to get back to our date. It was nice to meet you.” He dismisses him, turning his attention to the waiter to tell him which bottle of overpriced wine we’d like to drink. Spencer turns to me, his eyes flaring with something I don’t like the look of. Annoyance, anger even, and it leaves me feeling rather unsettled, especially when he continually seems to be popping up in the same places as me.

“Nice to see you again, Emily. Ben it was nice to meet you, too. Enjoy your evening.” The way Spencer says the word ‘nice’ implies anything but.

He spins on his heel and storms out of the restaurant, no sign of his supposed date in sight. I look down at the table, feeling uncomfortable and unsure of what to say next.

“Well, he seemed interesting. I thought you hadn’t been dating anyone, Emily.”

“Don’t you dare sit there and judge me, Ben. You left me, remember? What was I supposed to do? Become a nun and take a vow of celibacy until such time as you decided to return? Give me a fucking break. Spencer and I went out on four bloody dates. Four! And the only reason I met him in the first place was because Izzy set me up a stupid profile on some dating website. I didn’t even want to go. And I broke it off after the fourth date, which was before I knew you were even coming back, because he was freaking me out and acting all creepy. Don’t sit there with some sort of hurt look on your face because I didn’t tell you about him, because frankly, it’s none of your fucking business.
