Chapter Fourteen

Before they walked through the doorway, the woman held her hand out, stopping them. “He needs to stay outside,” she said. Megan thought about objecting, but when she glanced at the front yard, she saw a perfectly capable little tree in the middle of the lawn. She hurried out and tied the leash around it, patting Fred’s back. “Stay.”

When she returned to the house, she walked in and closed the door behind her, remaining in the small entrance area.

“I don’t like people staring in at me.” The woman switched on a lamp that stood on the carpet. “The judgement in their eyes sears on my skin even when I’m not looking.”

Her house was sparsely furnished with plain walls and not even a television. “I’m Launa Rodriguez, by the way.” She held her hand out and shook Megan’s briefly. “Pleased to meet you.” Her welcome was automatic, the kind of thing that simply tumbled from well-honed lips.

“Thank you for being willing to talk to me.” Megan shifted, feeling a bit uncomfortable as she glanced around the house. It was strange to be surrounded by someone’s life, their everyday comings and goings. An afghan rug lay in the center of the living area, and a depiction of the crucifixion hung in the hallway. “I’ve only been in Seacrest a short time,” she continued, “but I felt so strongly that I needed to talk to you.”

“I see.” Launa remained standing in the center of the room. “And what is it you’re so concerned about?”

Megan allowed her gaze to settle on Launa while she thought over the events that must have been so difficult only days earlier. A wedge of compassion lodged uncomfortably in her chest. “I’m so sorry for what you’ve been through. I understand you have a family?”

“Yes, my kids are staying with their grandparents. I’m only here to clear our things out before we sell.” Her answer was curt, clearly awaiting the main reason for Megan intruding on her privacy. But Megan could also sense a welcome to the conversation, as if the woman wanted to talk. It gave her just enough encouragement to be bold.

“I was hoping to get some insight into who might have had a motive to…” She shifted her weight. “To cause harm to your husband. Can you think of anyone?”

Launa sighed as if this were a well-worn question. “No. No one had bad feelings toward Carlos. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He could smooth talk even the nastiest client so successfully that they were best friends within the day.”

There was a hint of bitterness in her voice that Megan caught onto like a bloodhound to the scent. The aroma was unmistakable. Still, she wanted to be cautious.

“That’s what I was afraid of.” She rubbed her hands together, feeling a chill in the room. “It leaves very little to go on, besides the few people that live here and work at the Estates.” Megan studied the floor as she thought. “Do you feel it
